Guess what the NYT thinks was in poor taste about the Oscars?

maritsa-met:

NOT BLACKFACE. NOT RACIST JOKES.

Nope, it was Chris Rock telling the truth about Hollywood’s racism:

“Chris Rock followed with a racial joke, about black men getting lousy roles even in animated films. It may have been in questionable taste, but it jarred the show closer to modern times.”

I know none of us are surprised but…are you fucking kidding me?

so, “i hope there are flying monkeys in ‘gone with the wind’” wasn’t offensive and chris’ joke was? ok. my mistake.

Chris Rock making honest commentary about race in Hollywood: “questionable taste”

Billy Crystal in blackface: doesn’t warrant a mention.

Also from the article:

Meanwhile, a demographic survey by The Los Angeles Times renewed questions about the 5,800-member Academy’s cultural relevance. Membership was found to be overwhelmingly white, male and 60ish. The results echoed conventional wisdom, but provoked new debate about whether the Oscars still mattered to an increasingly diverse America, let alone a global audience.

O RLY. And what is the age/gender/race makeup of your editorial board? Yeahhhh that’s what I thought.
